이 표현은Opossum주머니쥐라는 동물에서 유래가 됐습니다. Opossum 주머니쥐를 앞에 O를 빼고 Possum이라고 불렀다고 하는데요, 주머니쥐는 위협을 느끼는 상황에 놓이면 죽은척을 해서 위기를 모면합니다. 그래서, 죽은 척하는 행동처럼 얕은 꾀로 상대방을 속이는 행동을 play possum이라고 합니다.
