회화와 문법을 동시에 공부하는 Everyday English VOA 매일영어 진행에 이은경 입니다. 오늘은 의사 우리가 보통 Doctor이라고 말하는 의사들, 특히 전문 분야의 전문의들은 또 따로 부르는 호칭이 있는데 영어로 어떻게 부르는지 살펴보겠습니다.

A: Welcome to the show John.

J: Good to be here.

A: Do you do a regular check-up with your physician?

J: Sometimes. But that’s not regular.

A: When you try to make an appointment with a specialist, it is sometimes hard to find a doctor. Today we’ll look at different types of doctors.

J: We simply call them doctors. But most doctors have an extra expertise in one type of medicine or another. In fact, there are several hundred medical specialties. So let’s go over the most common types of doctors you'll likely see here.

Now physician is a general term for a doctor who has earned a medical degree. Usually your primary doctor.

Family Physicians: Take care of the whole family, including children, adults, and the elderly. They do routine checkups and screening tests, give you flu and immunization shots, and manage things like diabetes and other ongoing medical conditions.

A: Physician, Family physician, primary doctor, 주치의, 개인 어느 한 사람의 건강 상태나 병에 대해 상담 또는 치료해 주는 의사, 보통 내과의사를 physician이라고 합니다.

J: A specialist is a doctor with advanced training in a specific area. 각분야의 전문의사, 여러종류의 의사들이 있습니다.

J: Surgeons: practice surgery. 수술을 담당하는 외과의사

J: An anesthesiologist: gives you drugs to numb your pain or to put you asleep during surgery, childbirth, or other procedures. And they monitor your vital signs while you’re under anesthesia. 마취과 의사

A Cardiologist is an expert on the heart and blood vessels. You might see them for heart failure, a heart attack, high blood pressure, or an irregular heartbeat. 심장 전문 의사

And a Dermatologist deals with problems with your skin 피부과 의사

Dentist: 치과의사

J: Neurologists are specialists in the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. 신경과의사

Obstetricians and Gynecologists, are often called OB/GYNs. They are doctors who focus on women's health, including pregnancy and childbirth. 산부인과 의사

Then there’s Ophthalmologists

A: You call them eye doctors. 안과 의사

J: Yes, because it’s easier to pronounce.

Now, a Doctor of Acupuncture is usually an Oriental doctor. 한의사

An Orthopedic surgeon specializes in bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints. 정형외과 의사

Then there’s Otolaryngology which is the unpronounceable term for ENTs which are ear nose and throat doctors.

Podiatrists care for problems in your ankles and feet. 발 전문 의사

A Pediatrician cares for children from birth to young adulthood. 소아과 의사

Plastic Surgeons

You might call them cosmetic surgeons. They rebuild or repair your skin, face, hands, breasts, or body after an injury or disease or for cosmetic reasons. 성형외과 의사

And Psychiatrists

are doctors who work with mental, emotional, or addictive disorders. 정신과 전문의사

Radiologists use X-rays, ultrasound, and other imaging tests to diagnose diseases. 방사선 전문의사

Urologists are surgeons who care for men and women with problems in the urinary tract, like the bladder. 비뇨기과 의사
