A: Hello, John. Welcome to the show.
J: Good to be here again.
A: Today, we will do role-playing. I will be your interviewer, and you will be an interviewee.
J: Am I looking for a job?
A: Yes, let’s pretend you are looking for a job.
J: Okay. Before we do role playing, I want to give our audience a little time to think about what kind of questions they might have to answer.
A: That’s a good idea. And you need time to think about the answers too. It’s been a long time since we’ve had to fill out a resume.
J: It’s been ages. However it’s pretty obvious the first question an interviewer will ask a person is
A: I know: Tell me about yourself.
J: Yes. A similar question will be, “Walk me through your resume”. It doesn’t mean you tell the interviewer exactly same thing you wrote. You use the resume to explain your strong points.
A: And the length, it should be less than a minute. You should be brief and clear.
J: Another must question you have to prepare for is, “Why do you want to work for this company?” Unfortunately, we can’t give you that answer.
A: But we can say, that you should have researched the company you want to work for.
J: Right, so you can start with a sentence like, Your Company is doing this, and I can contribute my skills to this area.
A: John, tell me about your strength and weakness.
J: My strength is good communication skills and problem-solving skills; my weakness is sometime I’m too critical to my work.
A: Excellent. You are hired.
J: Thank you. I want free parking and free lunches. Now I want to mention, when they ask a question like what’s your weakness, you can’t say I don’t have a weakness. I know you want to present yourself perfectly but we all know that nobody’s perfect.
A: Very good point. Another good example for weakness will be I’m too much of a perfectionist. Or I work too hard.
J: Yes, this kind of weakness is still a weakness but the company may like to hear that you are a hard working person.
A: And when you mention your weakness, don’t stop there. Mention that you are trying to fix your weakness.
J: Right, that way you can show that you acknowledge your weakness and you already know how to fix your problem and you are working on it. And you see progress.
A: Okay. Let’s spend little more time to prepare what to say about your strength. Could you give different answer for “Tell me your strength?”
J: Sure, my strength is I’m a team player. I can work with anybody. I have good social skills. I have multitasking skills. I’m very good at organizing. I can work under any conditions. I can handle my work even under pressure or a deadline.
A: Okay. Let’s move to another question. How do you handle stress?
J: Well we can’t avoid stress, I use stress as a motivator. After I overcome the stress, I get a more satisfying feeling. And of course exercise always helps.
A: Here’s another difficult question, why did you leave your last job?
J: Yes, you have to be honest about the reason why you left the previous job. However, never talk negatively about your previous company.
A: You can say I left my company for a better opportunity.
J: Or I was no longer challenged. I didn’t feel I could grow with the company. However, I saw great opportunity with this company and I think I can give all my talent and experience to this company and we can grow together.
A: Thank you for your time John. Any questions for me?
J: Thank you for the opportunity. What might be the next step after the interviewing process?
