J: Hello, John! Welcome to the show.

A: Thank you for having me.

J: Today, we’ll talk about personality. How do you describe your personality?

J: Oh I don’t know, optimistic?

A: Okay. This kind of conversation we usually start with when we ask somebody “What is he like?” In Korean 그 사람 어때요? Answer could be ….

J: Answer could be, he is outgoing, or he is very quiet, he is friendly, he is kind.

A: Describe something bad.

J: If he has bad personality, we can say, he is arrogant. An arrogant person is somebody who thinks he is better than anyone else is.

A: You mean stuck-up.

J: Yes, we say he’s arrogant, he’s stuck-up, he’s a show-off, he’s cocky, or he’s a Mr. Know-it-all.

Okay, John, tell me one more time. How do you describe a man who’s arrogant?

J: Arrogant, he’s stuck-up, he’s show-off, he’s cocky, or Mr. Know-it-all.

A: When you want to make sure that you’re not going to hurt someone’s feelings. Could I say “Am I being condescending?

J: Yes, condescending, is how we describe a person, who looks down on others, we say he’s condescending. So, when you want to confirm that your question is not condescending to others, you could say “I’m not trying to hurt your feelings, but did that sound condescending?

A: Let’s teach our audience, if somebody is talking to you in a condescending tone, we can say “Don’t talk to me that way; don’t use that condescending tone with me.” So John, we don’t like a person who’s a know-it-all but we respect a person who’s humble.

J: Yes, the opposite personality of arrogant is humble. You are so humble. You are a modest person. A humble person is one who is perhaps reserved, quiet. It means you are not arrogant or a know-it-all.

John, what do you call a person who acts like a child? But in a good way.

J: We might call that person a rascal. If my children make lot a noise and wake me up early on a weekend, I could say, “Which of you rascals woke me up?”

A: Yes, in this case, you were annoyed by your children’s loud noises but still you found it cute.

J: Right, if you are angry at the children, you don’t call them little rascals. We might say, “Children, behave!”

John, what do you call a person who’s coward?

J: We call a cowardly person a chicken, or a scaredy-cat. And speaking of cats, we call a person who mimics our behavior or copies our ideas, a copycat.

A: Yes, and sometimes we hear on the news that the police fear copycat crimes. John, do you play cards?

J: Sometimes.

A: Are you good at bluffing when you play cards?

J: You want to know what to call someone who’s maybe a big talker.

A: Wow. Yes.

J: We sometimes call someone a bluffer, or a big talker. Bluffing is really a form of lying; but we use it when we try to win a card game. We may act like we have a good card, but we don’t.

A: Thank you John.

J: Thank you.
