A: Welcome back, John.
J: Hello, so what are we talking about today?
A: I want to ask you about Friday the 13th.
J: Because you heard that it is unlucky?
A: Yes, and also black cats.
J: Okay, the number 13 used be unlucky, like there’s no 13th floor in some old buildings.
A: What do you do when you see a black cat?
J: It used to be that people avoided them. But people don’t do that now. However, I do try not to break mirrors.
A: Yes, I heard 7 years of bad luck.
J: Yes, but nobody I know believes it.
A: So, these are old traditions?
J: Yes, old superstitions, but people don’t believe them anymore. Except the one about not walking under an open ladder.
A: Because of bad luck?
J: Yes, that’s another old susperstition. But of course you don’t want a ladder to fall on you. However many Americans use these old superstitions as quick way to describe feeling or situations.
A: Like this? (Knock knock)
J: Yes, that’s knock on wood. If I say I think my cold is gone, knock on wood, that means I hope it’s gone. But’s it’s just an old habit. I don’t believe that knocking on wood actually helps.
A: It’s just an old saying.
J: Exactly. It’s like crossing our fingers when we hope that something will happen.
A: But people actually say cross your fingers.
J: Yes, some people do both. But I could just say it. I could say I think, cross my fingers, I think I’m getting the promotion.
A: And what about when people say bless you.
J: It used to be God bless you. When we sneeze, people say that. Some people used to believe that it was protection against the devil stealing your soul.
A: So, even though we don’t believe that anymore, it’s polite to say bless you to someone who sneezes.
J: Yes, it considered good manners. And when someone says bless you, we say thank you.
A: You have so many superstitions.
J: Yes, we talked about five out of maybe hundreds.
A: Since we are talking about good manners, I want to say Thank you for your time today John.
미국인들은 깨진 거울이 불운을 가져다 준다고 믿는다든지, 사다리 아래로 지나가면 나쁜 일이 일어날거라 생각합니다. 또 나무를 노크하는, 나무를 두드리는 행위는 어떤 일이 일어나길 바라거나, 어떤 일이 일어나길 바라지 않을때 하는데요, 이런 미신들을 믿는 사람도 있고, 믿지 않는 사람도 있지만, 한국 사람들이 상대방의 이름을 빨간색 펜으로 쓰지 않는 것처럼, 미국인 친구가 재채기를 하면 Bless you! 축복합니다.라고 말해주는 것이 좋겠죠.
