Egyptian prosecutors say former president Hosni Mubarak and his wife, Suzanne, have been questioned over allegations of illegally acquiring a portfolio of massive wealth.
Officials say the two were interrogated Thursday in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where Mubarak has been hospitalized after being ousted from office during massive anti-government protests in February. He reportedly suffers from heart problems and other ailments.
Prosecutors have launched an investigation into corruption and abuse of power by the former president and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa. Prosecutors have questioned Mubarak over several charges including ordering the shooting at anti-regime protesters.
Egyptian media say Thursday's interviews marked the first time Mubarak faced questions over his wealth. Media reports suggest the Mubarak family's assets may total billions of dollars.
Mubarak, 83, was hospitalized April 12 and has been detained there on prosecution holds lasting 15 days. His detention orders were extended twice, most recently on Tuesday.
News of the questioning comes after an Egyptian court this week sentenced the country's former tourism minister to five years in prison for corruption.
