An Egyptian court has sentenced the country's former tourism minister to five years in prison for corruption.
Judicial sources say a Cairo court found Zuheir Garana guilty Tuesday of intentionally wasting public funds by allowing two businessmen to buy state land illegally. The two businessmen were also sentenced to time in prison.
Garana is the second senior member of former President Hosni Mubarak's government to be convicted of corruption following the anti-government unrest that led to Mr. Mubarak's February ouster.
Last week, an Egyptian court sentenced former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly to 12 years in prison. The court also fined el-Adly $2.5 million on the corruption conviction, which included money laundering. He faces separate charges related to the killings of pro-democracy demonstrators for his role as head of security forces.
Prosecutors also have launched an investigation into corruption and abuse of power by the former president and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa.
