미 국방부 “북 도발에 민첩한 대비태세 유지”

미국 국방부는 북한의 도발에 대응해 민첩한 대비태세를 취하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 한국과 일본 순방에 나선 바이든 대통령의 안전 문제에도 관심을 기울이고 있다고 확인했습니다. 함지하 기자가 보도합니다.

존 커비 미 국방부 대변인은 북한의 도발에 대응한 확고한 대비태세를 강조했습니다.

[녹취: 커비 대변인] “Quite frankly, security in the Indo-Pacific is a long standing concern. That's why we have considered China our number one facing challenge, that's why we have talked about already even before this trip, making sure that we that we had a nimble posture with respect to North Korea and their future, past and potentially future provocations.”

커비 대변인은 19일 정례브리핑에서 “솔직히 말해 인도태평양 지역의 안보는 오랜 우려 사안”이라면서 “이런 이유 때문에 우리는 중국을 당면한 최우선 도전으로 꼽았고, (바이든 대통령의) 이번 순방 전부터 북한과 그들의 미래와 과거 그리고 잠재적인 도발에 대해 민첩한 자세를 취했다는 사실을 밝힌 것”이라고 말했습니다.

이 같은 발언은 ‘조 바이든 대통령의 한일 순방과 관련해 인도태평양 사령부에 안보와 관련한 우려는 없느냐’는 질문에 대한 답변으로 나왔습니다.

커비 대변인은 “제이크 설리번(국가안보보좌관)은 (미사일) 발사이든 핵실험이든 북한이 무엇인가 하는 데 대해 우리가 주시하고 심지어 예상하고 있으며 어쩌면 대통령이 그곳에 있는 동안 그럴 수 있다는 점에 대해 말했다”고 밝혔습니다.

[녹취: 커비 대변인] “You heard Jake Sullivan talk about the fact that we were monitoring and perhaps even expecting the North Koreans to do something whether it's a launch or a nuclear test, perhaps while the president's in theater. He also said very clearly that you know should that happen, we'll take a look at our own security posture and footprint as appropriate. But I don't think we want to get ahead of ourselves right now and certainly not going to telegraph that. Anytime the president travels overseas, security is a concern.”

이어 “그는 만약 그런 일이 발생할 경우 우리의 안보 태세가 적절한지 살펴볼 것이라는 점을 매우 분명히 말했다”면서도 “현 시점에선 너무 앞서 나가길 원치 않고, 물론 미리 공개하지도 않을 것”이라고 덧붙였습니다.

그러면서 “대통령이 해외를 순방할 때마다 안전은 관심사안”이라고 말했습니다.
