김정은 위원장이 트럼프 대통령에게 보낸 친서에서 2차 정상회담을 요청했다고 백악관이 밝혔습니다. 구체적 일정이 정해지진 않았지만 회담이 열릴 수 있도록 조율 중이라고 확인했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.
백악관은 김정은이 트럼프 대통령에 보낸 친서의 주요 목적은 트럼프 대통령과의 또 한번의 회담을 요청하기 위해서였다며 미국은 여기에 열려 있고 이미 조율 절차를 밟고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “Yes. The President has received the letter from KJU. It was a very warm and very positive letter. We won’t release the full letter unless the North Korean leader agrees that we should. The primary purpose of the letter was to request and look to schedule another meeting with the President, which we are open to and are already on the process of coordinating that.”
새라 샌더스 백악관 대변인은 10일 정례브리핑에서 김정은의 친서가 트럼프 대통령에 전달됐느냐는 질문에 편지를 전달받았고 이는 매우 따듯하고 긍정적인 편지였다며 이같이 답했습니다.
아울러 북한 지도자가 동의하지 않는 이상 친서의 전문을 공개하지 않을 것이라고 설명했습니다.
이어 북한의 최근 군사 열병식만큼은 핵무력을 강조한 열병식이 아니었다며 트럼프 대통령은 지금까지의 정책을 통해 엄청난 성공을 거뒀다고 말했습니다. 김정은의 친서는 이런 관계의 진전을 보여주는 추가적인 증거라는 겁니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “The recent parade in North Korea for once was not about their nuclear arsenal. The President has achieved tremendous success with his policies so far, and this letter was further evidence of the progress in that relationship. A number of things have taken place. The remains have come back, and the hostages have returned, there has been no testing of missile or nuclear material. And of course the historic summit between the two leaders and this letter are just further indication of the progress we hope to continue to make.”
이어 많은 일들이 일어났다며, 미군 유해가 돌아왔고 북한에 억류됐던 인질들을 돌려받았으며 북한은 미사일과 핵물질 실험을 하지 않았다고 강조했습니다.
또한 역사적인 미-북 정상회담과 최근 친서는 미국이 계속해서 만들어나가기를 바라는 진전을 보여주는 추가 신호라고 덧붙였습니다.
샌더스 대변인은 폼페오 국무장관의 방북 취소 이후 어떤 진전이 이뤄졌기에 이렇게 낙관적이 됐느냐는 질문에, 북한의 이번 열병식은 핵무력을 강조하지 않은 거의 첫 번째 열병식으로 알고 있다며 이를 선의의 신호로 생각한다고 답했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “Again, certainly the most recent parade this weekend, one of the first time I believe that they had parade similar where they weren’t highlighting their nuclear arsenal. We consider that a sign of good faith. Again the letter from KJU to the president certainly showed a commitment to continue in conversation, continuing to work on progress that they have had since their meeting just few months ago, and also the continued commitment to focus on denuclearization of the peninsula.”
또한 김정은의 친서는 대화를 계속하겠다는 약속과 싱가포르 정상회담 이후부터 이뤄온 진전을 위해 계속 노력하겠다는 약속, 그리고 한반도의 비핵화에 계속 집중하겠다는 약속을 명확히 보여준다고 설명했습니다.
그러면서 궁극적으로는 두 지도자가 마주 앉는 것이 항상 최선이라고 말했습니다. 특히 북한의 경우는 대부분의 결정이 김정은을 통해야만 하며 김정은은 트럼프 대통령과 대화하고 싶어할 것이란 설명입니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “At the end of the day, ultimately it is always going to be the best when you can have two leaders sit down, particularly from North Korean side we know most of the decisions are going to have to run through KJU. Certainly he is going to want to talk to his counterpart, President Trump. We think it is important and we are glad that we are making progress.”
이어 미국은 이것이 중요하다고 생각하며 진전을 만들고 있어 기쁘다고 덧붙였습니다.
샌더스 대변인은 2차 미-북 정상회담 개최지가 워싱턴이 될 가능성이 있느냐는 질문에 구체적인 내용이 있을 때 다시 알려줄 것이라고 답했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “We will let you know when we have further details but certainly something that we want it to take place and we… already continuing to work on making that happen… I don’t have any specifics on exact timing as these conversations for the second meeting are taking place now. As we have more details, I will certainly let you know.”
그러나 미국은 이 회담이 당연히 열리기를 바라고 회담이 열릴 수 있도록 벌써 계속 노력하고 있다고 설명했습니다.
다만 회담 시기와 관련해서는, 현재 대화가 진행 중이기 때문에 구체적으로 알지 못한다고 말했습니다.
샌더스 대변인은 중국이 미-북 간의 최근 진전 상황에 공이 있느냐는 질문에 공은 트럼프 대통령에 있는 것 같다고 답했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “I think that the President deserves the credit in this progress. He has been the lead voice and the one that put the initial pressure on North Korea. Certainly the President has very publicly expressed his gratitude toward President Xi for the role that they played. He would have liked to have seeing them continue to step up and do more. Frankly we still like to them to step up and do more. But the credit in this process this point where we are I think belongs to the President Trump. We are going to continue to hopefully work with President Xi and his team and his administration in continuing making progress.”
이 문제를 주도적으로 이끌고 북한에 처음 압박을 가한 것은 트럼프 대통령이라는 설명입니다.
아울러 트럼프 대통령은 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 해온 역할에 대해 공개적으로 감사의 뜻을 밝힌 바 있다고 말했습니다.
또한 트럼프 대통령은 중국이 계속해서 더욱 많은 일을 하는 것을 보기 원했을 것이고 미국은 여전히 중국이 그렇게 하기를 바란다고 설명했습니다.
아울러 바라건대 시진핑 주석과 그의 팀, 중국 정부와 함께 진전을 계속 만들어나가는 데 대한 협력을 이어갈 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
