백악관은 북한이 전세계를 위해 올바른 일을 하기 바란다며 미국의 목표는 완전하고 전체적인 비핵화라고 밝혔습니다. 북한으로부터 선의의 표시를 봐왔다면서도 이런 목표를 달성할 때까지 최대 압박은 계속된다는 점도 거듭 강조했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.
백악관은 미-북 정상회담의 최상의 결과는 완전하고 전체적인 비핵화를 위한 합의를 이뤄내는 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “Certainly is not going to get ahead of those conversation as you stated, we plan for a full day meeting on 12th with some time reserved to carry over if necessary, certainly the best outcome would be an agreement for complete and total denuclearization.”
새라 샌더스 백악관 대변인은 11일 정례브리핑에서 하루 동안 열릴 예정인 정상회담에서 무엇을 얻을 수 있겠느냐는 지적에 앞으로 이뤄질 대화들에 대해 앞서나가지 않겠다며 이같이 말했습니다.
이어 지금은 이 모든 대화들을 시작하는 부분이라며 (회담) 당일 무엇을 기대하는지 말하지는 않겠지만 미국은 최상의 결과가 무엇인지에 대해 꽤 솔직하게 밝혀왔다고 설명했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “But this is the beginning part of these conversations I am not going to get ahead of what we expect for that day, but certainly I think the best outcome, we have been pretty upfront about that. “
샌더스 대변인은 (김정은과) 폼페오 장관의 두 번의 만남을 비롯해 북한과 여러 차례 대화가 있었다는 점도 거듭 강조했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “There have been several conversations that have taken place leading up to both Secretary Pompeo has had now two meetings that have been part of this process. So it is not just one day that you have look at the broader picture but certainly we have that time set aside at this point.”
큰 그림으로 보면 대화가 하루 동안만 이뤄지는 게 아니라는 겁니다.
샌더스 대변인은 북한이 핵 무력을 완성했다고 주장하는 가운데 비핵화를 이뤄낼 수 있다고 보느냐는 질문에 트럼프 대통령은 정신을 바짝 차리고 이 문제에 접근할 것이라고 답했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “Look the president is going into this with eyes wide open. As he’s said many times, ‘we’ll see what happens’ but this is certainly a process that has moved in the right direction. We’ve seen some signs of good will from North Korea just this week with the three Americans brought back home, also the stopping of the ballistic missile test, them stopping with the research and development on their nuclear program”
트럼프 대통령이 자주 말해왔듯 어떤 일이 일어날지 지켜볼 것이라는 겁니다.
하지만 올바른 방향으로 가는 진전이 확실히 있었다고 강조했습니다.
그러면서 북한으로부터 일부 선의의 표시들을 봤다며 이번 주 북한에 억류됐다 풀려난 미국인들과 북한이 탄도미사일 실험과 핵 프로그램의 연구 개발을 중단했다는 점을 상기시켰습니다.
이어 미국은 완전하고 전체적인 비핵화를 계속 밀어붙일 것이라며 이런 일이 일어나는 것을 볼 때까지 최대 압박을 계속할 것이라고 강조했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “And we are going to continue to push for complete and total denuclearization. We’re also going to continue maximum pressure until we see that happen.”
샌더스 대변인은 북한이 핵 무력을 완성했다고 밝힌 상황에서 포기하는 것이 가능하느냐는 지적이 이어지자 대통령은 무언가 이뤄지는 것을 보기 위해 회담에 들어간다는 점을 매우 명확히 했다면서도 대통령이 말했듯 어떻게 될지 지켜볼 것이라고 답했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “The president has been very clear that we are going into this certainly we would like to see something happen, but as he has said many times, we are going to see what happens. And we hope not just for North Korea but for the entire world that they do the right thing and if this goes forward in the way that I think anyone would like to see.”
이어 미국은 북한이 북한뿐만 아니라 전세계를 위해 올바른 일을 하기 바라며 모든 사람들이 보고 싶어하는 방향으로 나아가길 바란다고 덧붙였습니다.
샌더스 대변인은 미-북 정상회담에 문재인 한국 대통령이 참여할 것이냐는 질문에 회담 당일에는 그런 계획이 없는 것으로 알고 있다고 답했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “I don’t believe that there are plans for them to be in part of that specific day, but certainly have been partner in this entire process. And as you know the president Moon will be here on 22nd to continue those conversations.”
하지만 한국은 분명히 이 모든 과정에서 파트너였으며 알다시피 문 대통령은 이런 대화들을 계속하기 위해 22일 워싱턴을 방문할 것이라고 설명했습니다.
