South African NGO Director Aims to Reduce Gun Violence Through Advocacy
The South Africa Firearms Control Act 2000 regulates the possession of firearms by civilians and reduces gun availability. Gun critics say limiting access to guns is proving to be successful in reducing the death toll. A proposed amendment to the gun law would prevent women in South Africa from obtaining a firearm license, even for self-defense. VOA’s Ndimyake Mwakalyelye spoke to Adèle Kirsten, director of Gun Free South Africa, a non-profit organization which strives to reduce gun violence in the country. Adèle says that restricted gun laws reduce intimate femicide and not the possession of a firearm. She discusses the controversial firearms debate and how Gun Free South Africa explores effective and non-lethal ways to defend oneself.
