Rights Group: US Ignored Abuse of 2 Americans in Pakistan

A leading human rights group has accused the United States of turning a blind eye to the detention and torture of two U.S. citizens of Pakistani origin who were held in Pakistan as terror suspects.

Human Rights Watch says the two men, Zain and Kashan Afzal were kept at a secret location in Pakistan and routinely tortured and threatened.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the rights group said U.S. FBI agents repeatedly interrogated the brothers, but did not insist on stopping their torture or providing consular facilities normally offered to detained U.S. citizens.

The FBI denies the allegations.

The brothers say they trained in 1999 to fight in the guerrilla war in Indian Kashmir, but never joined the insurgency. They were arrested in Karachi last August and held for eight months without any charge.

Human Rights Watch says that at the time of their release on April 22, the men were warned not to discuss their detention.
