Let’s start off in fifth place, where Major Lazer, DJ Snake, and MO jump a slot with “Lean On.” Who are these people you ask? When a song earns Hot Shot Debut honors in third place, you know it’s a hit. One Direction gets that distinction this week with “Drag Me Down.” The group has been in the news a lot this year, first Zayn Malik left, then Louis Tomlinson became an expectant father. But, they still have chart power. Here’s a surprising fact: One Direction has never topped the U.S. Hot 100 chart. The guys came close in 2013, when “Best Song Ever” peaked at number two.

The Weeknd shifts into overdrive this week, as “Can’t Feel My Face” earns him a trip to number one. How did this shadowy Canadian singer become such a big star? The Weeknd began recording five years ago, working with producer Jeremy Rose. He kept his true identity a secret at first, before attracting attention with a series of performances in 2011. He is now poised to take it to the next level with the August 28 release of his album Beauty Behind The Madness.
