Pakistani officials say more than 100,000 people have fled their homes in the northwestern tribal region along the Afghan border following the military's assault against Taliban hideouts.

Authorities say the military pounded militant targets in North Waziristan Friday, but it was not immediately clear how many militants were killed.

The fighting has triggered a huge exodus of civilians from the tribal area into several Pakistani cities and across the border into Afghanistan.

More than 200 insurgents have been killed since the offensive was launched last week following a bloody militant attack on the airport in Karachi.

The military action has brought an end to months of the government's efforts to negotiate a peace deal with the Pakistani Taliban.
