At least five people have been killed in a suspected U.S. drone strike in a northwestern tribal region of Pakistan that is near the Afghan border.
Pakistani officials say a drone fired multiple missiles on Wednesday at targets in North Waziristan, a region where the Pakistani army announced a "comprehensive operation" against militants this week.
The identities of those killed were not immediately available.
On Tuesday, Pakistani officials said at least 187 suspected militants had been killed in the region since the military operation began Sunday.
Pakistani army chief General Raheel Sharif said the goal of the operation was to eliminate "all terrorists and their sanctuaries" in North Waziristan and to "get rid of the menace of terrorism."
The military operation comes after last week's militant attack on an airport in Karachi left nearly 40 people dead, including 10 assailants.
The U.S. rarely publicly talks about the drone program in Pakistan.
Pakistani officials say the strikes recently resumed after being suspended in December.
