A 2021 report by Chainalysis, a leading blockchain data platform, found that adoption of crypto in Africa surged 1,200% between July 2020 and June 2021. It is reported that Africa has the third-fastest growing cryptocurrency economy and has witnessed some of the highest grassroots adoption in the world, with Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania being the hubs of this booming industry. VOA’s Amina Aliyu spoke to Oluwaseun Craig Adeyanju, business and technology writer in Nigeria about how cryptocurrency found its niche in Africa. He discusses factors driving crypto adoption in Africa and how people have benefitted from this digital currency. Amina also spoke to VOA’s Arzouma Kompaoré about Nigeria’s digital currency eNaira and the implications it will have on the continent.
