With many drivers staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for corn-based ethanol, a carbon-neutral fuel mixed with gasoline, has plummeted. In 2018, the United States exported about 1.7 billion gallons of ethanol to more than 80 countries. As VOA’s Kane Farabaugh reports, that amount is expected to drop this year, a troubling sign for farmers in the country that leads the world in corn – and ethanol – production.
