The humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), is expressing deep concern over the relocation of approximately 200 Somali refugee families per day to the Ifo Three extension camp in Dadaab, Kenya. The organization says the camp cannot properly provide such basics such as water and sanitation to refugees.
Dadaab hospitals available to the refugees are already overcrowded.
Alfonso Verdu, the program manager for Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia for MSF, recommended instead the Ifo Two camp, which he said was already equipped with a minimum humanitarian and medical standard in order to properly receive the refugees.
“So basically, boreholes and latrines, showers, electricity centers and even some schools were already ready. “So instead the population has been relocated to another place which in the past was known as Ifo Three,” explained Verdu.
He said that camp is not properly prepared for the huge influx of refugees, and that “regardless of where the people live, the minimum standards are unsure. This is what we are struggling with right now.”
Verdu said the UNCHR along with the approval and support of the government of Kenya initiated the relocation of the refugees.
MSF calls on the government and UNHCR to relocate the refugees to Ifo Two immediately.
