LIVE BLOG: Clinton Becomes First Woman Nominated for President

update

The Democratic Party made it official Tuesday, naming Hillary Clinton their candidate for president in 2016 – and making history by selecting the first woman to represent a major U.S. political party. Following the roll call vote, Tuesday's speakers included former President Bill Clinton as well as the Mothers of the Movement -- the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland and other young black victims of violence.

As the Mothers of the Movement walk out on stage -- Sybrina Fulton, Geneva Reed-Veal, Lucy McBath, Gwen Carr, Cleopatra Pendelton, Maria Hamilton, Lezley McSpadde, and Wanda Johnson -- the crowd in the arena begins chanting "Black Lives Matter!"

Tony Goldwyn, actor and co-chair of the Innocence Project Artists’ Committee, introduces a handful of women whose black sons or daughters have died through gun violence or in police custody: They’ve “turned their pain into power and their outrage into action. They are the Mothers of the Movement.
