Award-winning Journalist Sheds Light on the Dangers of Sex Trafficking in Nigeria
In a recent report, the International Organization for Migration says there are at least 1.4 million victims of human trafficking living under coercion, exploitation, and humiliation in Nigeria. United Nations agencies have reported that Nigerian women make up one of the largest groups on international sex trafficking victims. VOA’s Amina Aliyu spoke to Tobore Ovuorie, Nigerian investigative journalist and laureate of the 2021 DW Freedom of Speech award, about her life-threatening undercover human trafficking experience. Tobore recounts her journey witnessing corruption, violence, and abuse during her investigation in Nigeria. She believes information empowerment is key to informing young people about the dangers of embarking on risky journeys.
