Tennis: Federer Reaches Quarterfinals of Thailand Open


World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland has reached the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open in Bangkok, thanks to an easy win over Germany's Denis Gremelmayr.

Federer, the defending champion, took slightly more than one hour to beat the German player in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). The Swiss player next takes on Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, a three-set winner over eighth seed Luis Horna of Peru (6-7, 7-6, 6-3).

Meanwhile, second seeded Lleyton Hewitt of Australia had a tough fight but advanced past American Justin Gimelstob in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 7-6). The Australian plays Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan in the quarterfinals. Srichaphan ousted Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain (7-5, 6-4).

Also Thursday, 18-year-old Briton Andrew Murray defeated fifth-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden (7-6, 7-6). In the quarterfinals, Murray plays American Robby Ginepri.

Fifth-seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland scored a straight-set win over Russian Dmitry Tursunov (7-6, 6-4). The Finn takes on Yeu-Tzoo Wang of Taiwan, a straight-set winner over fourth-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany (7-5, 6-3).
