Indonesian President Arrives in US for Economic, Military Talks

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

Indonesia's president has arrived in the United States for economic and military talks.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected Wednesday to hold talks with President Bush and other top officials during his two-day visit. His trip is the first visit to Washington since his election in October.

The White House says trade and tsunami relief operations will top the agenda. A spokesman for President Yudhoyono says he will also push for normalization of military relations with the United States. Relations were suspended 13 years ago over human rights abuses by the Indonesian army in conflicts in East Timor and other regions.

The Indonesian president's visit comes a day ahead of talks in Finland between Indonesian government representatives and rebels who want independence for the northern province of Aceh.
