Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai pledged to work together to achieve greater regional stability and prosperity.
The two men expressed their resolve Wednesday in Islamabad, on the opening day of the third Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan.
Speaking to delegates from more than 40 nations and organizations at the two-day conference, Mr. Karzai said the most menacing challenge to the region's prosperity is extremism and terrorism.
He and Mr. Gilani vowed to eliminate terrorism on both sides of their shared border.
Mr. Gilani emphasized that Afghan development must be a top priority, and he called for delegates to accelerate work on development projects.
The United Nations Special Representative for Afghanistan, Kai Eide, is among the conference attendees. One day before the conference opened Tuesday, he said the two previous conferences did not yield concrete results, and he expressed hope that this time would be different.
