Heavy rains and strong winds have lashed the Italian city of Venice as the area experiences its worst flooding in more than 20 years.
Residents and tourists waded through knee-deep water as Mayor Massimo Cacciari urged people to stay indoors. Most of the city's water taxis have suspended service as water levels rose to 156 centimeters, the highest mark since 1986.
A number of Croatian towns and ports along the Adriatic were also flooded Monday.
Venice, Italy is built on a collection of marshy islands and crisscrossed by canals and suffers from periodic flooding.
The Italian government has launched a multi-billion dollar floodgate project aimed at preventing the floods from destroying the city.
