Deadly Suicide Attack in Afghanistan Kills Children, NATO Soldier

update

A suicide attack in central Afghanistan Friday killed 10 people, including children and a NATO soldier.

A car filled with explosives slammed into a NATO convoy in central Uruzgan province, killing five Afghan children, four other civilians and a NATO soldier. Three other soldiers and several other Afghan civilians were wounded.

Later, a second suicide bomber targeted another NATO convoy in the southern city of Kandahar, wounding five civilians.

In southern Helmand province, the U.S.-led coalition says more than 24 suspected Taleban militants were killed in a nine-hour battle.

A statement says air support was called in after a coalition and Afghan patrol came under attack in Sangin district.

And in Zabul province, coalition and Afghan forces killed an unspecified number of militants in a firefight. A civilian caught in the crossfire died of his wounds.

Elsewhere Friday, a U.S.-led coalition soldier was killed in fighting in Paktika province.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-led coalition says it is investigating Taleban claims that militants captured a foreign soldier Tuesday in Helmand province.

If confirmed, it would be the first kidnapping of a coalition soldier by the Taleban since the extremist group was pushed from power by a U.S.-led invasion in 2001.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
