U.S. officials say Pakistan and Afghanistan must decide for themselves on an appropriate and effective method of reducing cross-border infiltration.
In an interview with VOA Wednesday the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Nicholas Burns, said Pakistan's plan to lay land mines along parts of its border with Afghanistan is a bilateral issue.
Afghan officials have opposed the plan, saying it will do little to prevent terrorism.
Afghanistan has repeatedly accused Pakistan of not doing enough to stop Taleban militants from infiltrating their shared border.
Burns also said he hopes the two sides can resolve a wave of Taleban-led attacks on civilians and NATO forces inside Afghanistan.
Fighting in Afghanistan increased dramatically last year, killing thousands and igniting tensions between Kabul and Islamabad.
