One of the most popular rock groups of the 1970s, Loggins & Messina, are reuniting for their first tour in more than 25 years. The "Sittin' In Again Reunion Tour" opens in Boise, Idaho on June 24, and continues in the United States for three months.
Kenny Loggins has had his share of magical musical moments, but according to Loggins, nothing compared to playing alongside Jim Messina. The idea to tour again originated when the duo got together last year for a benefit concert in California.
Loggins says, "I've been playing a lot of these songs, like 'House At Pooh Corner' alone for years, and when Jimmy came in I remembered who we were. Something magic happens when the two of us sing together."
Something magical indeed. From 1972 to 1977, the duo released eight albums that brought instant success to the young singer-songwriters. More success than Jim Messina had producing Poco and Buffalo Springfield, and more success than Kenny Loggins had as a staff songwriter for Liberty Records. In fact, Messina produced and appeared on Loggins first solo album, Sittin' In With Jim Messina, a best-seller that paved the way for their acclaimed musical partnership.
Riding the wave of folk rock that made stars of Jackson Browne, The Byrds, and Crosby, Stills and Nash in the early 1970s, Loggins and Messina found their own niche with strains of country, jazz, pop and sometimes even world music.
Time has passed but the chemistry remains, and that made all the difference. Summing it up, Jim Messina says, "In the long run, it was the friendship that brought us back together." Adds Kenny Loggins, "Nothing like 30 years to be the great leveler."
All differences aside, the pair is set to play 40 concert dates in arenas, casinos, and amphitheaters across the country. The show will feature songs from the Loggins & Messina songbook, plus each will perform a solo set with special guests in various cities.
