Defending champion Vince Spadea has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Tennis Channel Open in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a three-set victory over Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and Montenegro, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Spadea lost service in the third set Thursday to fall behind 4-3 before winning the last three games.
Moving past the second round at the expense of two Americans were Christophe Rochus of Belgium and Davide Sanguinetti of Italy. Rochus upset fifth-seeded Kevin Kim, 6-3, 6-1. Rochus said winning four matches in a Challenger event in France last week gave him a boost of confidence.
Sanguinetti beat Paul Goldstein, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Goldstein got into the main draw after top seed Tommy Haas of Germany withdrew because of flu.
