World number one Lindsay Davenport plays Elena Dementieva while second ranked Amelie Mauresmo of France takes on Vera Zvonareva of Russia at the season-ending WTA women's tennis championships in Los Angeles, Wednesday.
Davenport leads the Red Group in the round-robin portion of the tournament. The group includes French Open champion Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva of Russia and former Tour championship winner Serena Williams of the United States.
Williams faces Myskina in her opening match Wednesday.
Mauresmo leads the black group, which includes U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and Vera Zvonareva of Russia. Mauresmo starts the tournament against Zvonareva Wednesday.
After round-robin play, the top two players in each group advance to the semifinals. A single-elimination semifinal and final will be played and the winner crowned. The singles champion takes home $1 million and receives a Porsche automobile to donate to her favorite charity.
