University of Texas Observes 50th Anniversary of Tower shooting
Mass shootings have become a sad feature of life today in the United States, but 50 years ago the nation was shocked when former marine and engineering student Charles Whitman ascended the tower that looms over the campus of the University of Texas in Austin and began firing at people below. He killed more than a dozen and wounded more than 30 others before police killed him. As VOA’s Greg Flakus reports from Austin, Texas, there is now a memorial beneath the tower to honor those who died.
