Cease-Fire Holds in Disputed Nagorno-Karabakh Region
- By Mike Eckels
The worst fighting in years has been going on this week in Nagorno-Karabakh, the region inside Azerbaijan that is controlled by ethnic Armenians. Each side accuses the other of violating a cease-fire that was agreed Tuesday in Moscow. Russia, which has a military base in Armenia and sells weapons to Azerbaijan, sent Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Baku and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to Yerevan to try to help the two former Soviet republics settle their long-standing territorial dispute. Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian has also met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
