South Africa Miners Say Conditions Haven’t Improved a Year After Deadly Strike
Miners at South Africa’s Lonmin platinum mine held an illegal strike for higher wages and better living conditions last year, a confrontation that escalated into a deadly police shooting that left 34 strikers dead. In the end, after weeks of tension and negotiation, Lonmin relented and offered raises and said they would improve the community. But as VOA’s Anita Powell discovered when she returned a year later, many residents are still living in the same dire conditions as they were a year ago - and many say they never saw those raises, either.
