Zhou: No problem. (Subtitle)
Zhou: Easy. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. (She shoots it into the children.) Oops. Sorry guys!
Chris Buchleitner”
Garden’s Ice House
Zhou: So, Coach Chris, how long have you been skating or teaching (ice) hockey?
Coach: I’ve been playing for probably about 30 years. I started young. And I started teaching in my early 20s. So about 20 years I’ve been teaching.
Zhou: What is ice hockey? What do you want to do?
Coach Buckleitner: Sure. The game is played with five skaters and a goalie and …
Coach Buckleitner: …you play against another team with five skaters and a goalie. And you’re trying to get the puck into your opponent’s net. And you have to utilize your teammates … you know, you’re passing the puck and trying to get open for your teammates. And trying to score a goal. And trying to keep the puck out of your own net.
Coach Buckleitner: I think it’s the most difficult sport to play because as you can see, it takes years just to become an efficient skater. And then adding in the stick handling, the shooting and the team concepts … it really takes years to really become pretty good at the game.
Coach: The reason it’s grown is the story of the 1980 Olympics.
Coach: That story for my generation … I was a young kid about 9 years old when that happened. And we grew up with that story. Where in 1980 when we were only using the amateur athletes for our games, we played the powerhouse of Russia, the USSR, and the Soviet team was by far the best in the world. They were the best athletes in the world. They weren’t considered professional because they were part of the military. And we were using our college hockey players who were amateurs. So, for the U.S. to beat that team was truly a Miracle on Ice. So that was the story that got so much recognition. They made movies about it. But that really inspired kids my age to start playing.
Albert:
Albert:
Kevin: I’m Kevin Flock and I’ve been playing seven years.
Zhou: That’s a long time. So how old were you when you started?
Kevin: Three.
Zhou: Do you remember back then?
Kevin: Yeah, I remember I started with just skating lessons.
Zhou: And how long did it take you to get to the hockey part?
Kevin: It took me about a year and a half.
