Here in America, even if you don’t know each other at all but find out that you both have the same alma mater, you quickly become good acquaintances and aren’t afraid to show your school pride!
미국에서는 서로가 아는 사이가 아니라도, 같은 학교에 다녔다는 걸 알게되면 참 좋아합니다. 그리고 미국사람들은 학교에 대한 자부심이 대단합니다.

Georgetown, like many universities across America is a close-knit group of top students, faculty, alumni, and corporate partners who share a wealth of school pride and love for our campus!

I saw someone who was wearing my alma mater t-shirt the other day and I couldn’t help but say hello. As soon as I told her I am an alumnus of Georgetown, she wasn’t afraid to show off our school pride by shouting out our school’s cheer ‘Hoya Saxa!’We immediately shared a fun conversation that had me reminiscing about the days when I used to be a student there.

저는 얼마전에 워씽톤 DC 길거리에서 제가 다녔던 조지타운대학 티셔츠를 입고있는 사람을 봤는데요. 보자마자 저도 조지타운대 출신이라고했더니 그 사람은 거리낌없이 조지타운대학 구호를 외치더라고요. 그리고 저와 그 사람은 아주 즐거운 대화를 나눴습니다. 제게는 대학시절에 추억이 떠오르는 이야기였습니다.

오늘의 영어 표현은(be) close-knit입니다? 잘들어보세요! Listen carefully!

Jen: What are you studying there? How long have you been there and what’s the environment like at school?
Grace: I’m a senior in the college. I am an American Studies major and I love Georgetown. So all things good!
Jen: What do you like about Georgetown though, specifically?
Grace: Specifically, I love my major. America Studies is a really close-knit group. I love all of the campus activities, I love living in D.C., I love living in Georgetown and I like everything about it.

제가 Grace 그래이쓰 에게 ‘조지타운대학교에서 무엇을 전공하고 또 학교 분위기는 어떤지 물어봤더니, 그래이쓰는 아주 기분 좋은 목소리로 ‘미국학을 전공하고있는 대학 4학년이고 조지타운 대학을 무척사랑해요!’ 라고 하더라고요.

제가 ‘조지타운대학교가 왜 그렇게 좋으냐고 물어봤더니, ‘Specifically, I love my major. 제가 전공하는 과목을 아주 좋아하고요 America Studies is a really close-knit group학과 분위기가 아주 좋아서예요. 학생들끼리 가족처럼 가깝게 지내거든요’ 라고 하더라고요.

오늘의 영어 표현은: (be) close-knit이죠?

Close / C L O S E 는 ‘가까운’ 이라는 뜻이죠?
그레서 ‘be close-knit’하면 가깝게 지내다 라는 뜻입니다.

그리고 ‘be’를 빼고 그냥 ‘Close-knit’이라고 하면 ‘긴밀히 맺어진, 굳게 단결된’ 이라는 뜻이 있습니다.
Close-knit means to be closely united; held tightly together, as by social or cultural ties.
