Michael Lipin

A multimedia journalist with 26 years of experience as a writer, reporter, news editor and producer/host of radio and TV shows, Michael Lipin covers international affairs as a VOA bridge editor. Based in Washington, he produced and hosted VOA’s weekly podcast Flashpoint Iran from October 2022 to March 2024. The November 14, 2023 edition of Flashpoint Iran won a First Place Award for Best Podcast of 2023 in the Chesapeake AP Broadcasters Association Contest. The contest is open to Washington D.C., Maryland and Delaware-based journalists who work for Associated Press members and for VOA, which uses AP content. Lipin also has done multiple assignments in Israel, interviewing senior political and military figures about Israel-Iran tensions and covering Israel’s April 2019 Knesset election and the 2017 and 2018 visits of U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to Jerusalem, Israel’s U.S.-recognized capital. One of Lipin’s biggest VOA projects was 2021’s ‘Persians of Israel’, a video documentary series that he wrote and produced about his interviews with prominent Israeli-Persians who reveal their little-publicized contacts with Iran’s people and ideas for reviving the Israeli-Iranian friendship. Lipin also wrote and produced VOA’s 2021 web project ‘Ground Zero – Then and Now’, the only interactive news report to comprehensively document the histories of 10 buildings and a plaza lost in New York City’s Lower Manhattan on 9/11 and the progress of rebuilding in the 20 years that followed. Prior to VOA, Lipin was a journalist for TV and radio networks in his hometown of Hong Kong, including CNN International. Lipin holds a master’s degree in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University.
