Liyuan Lu

Liyuan Lu is an award-winning broadcast journalist at Voice of America’s Mandarin Service. She grew up in China and worked as a press officer in the Chinese Foreign Ministry until 1999 when she came to the U.S. to pursue her graduate studies in international relations and journalism. Since joining the Mandarin Service of VOA in 1999, Lu has covered major news events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks and U.S. presidential elections. She also served as a radio show host and TV anchor for many years.

Lu currently serves as the Mandarin Service’s Foreign Affairs Correspondent, covering major foreign policy developments in the State Department and the White House. In this capacity, she traveled with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry when he visited Asia in 2015, and covered President Obama’s summits with heads of Southeast Asian Countries in Sunnylands, California and Vientiane, Laos. Lu also covered the first summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago, Florida in April 2017.

Lu earned her B.A from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1991 and received her Master’s degree in international relations from the School of International & Public Affairs at Columbia University in 1999.
