Kasim Kashgar

Kasim Abdurehim Kashgar, also known as Asim Kashgarian, is a Uyghur journalist who covers international news related to China and the Uyghur population.  

Kashgar was born in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China. Before starting to work for VOA in 2019, he founded a language education school in Urumqi, the region’s capital.

Until May 2023, Kashgar used the pen name Asim Kashgarian when writing for VOA in English and Chinese, out of fear for family and colleagues remaining in China. Several months after receiving asylum, Kashgar decided to use his name when reporting.
