Resident of northern Afghanistan district says some Taliban are calling for return to sharia
Residents of the Almkhil town in the northern Balkh province of Afghanistan are returning to their houses destroyed in the fighting to collect their belongings as a temporary cease-fire largely holds between the Taliban and the Afghan government. Gul Rahim Niazman reports from Balkh, Afghanistan.
Afghan officials said this week they have managed to secure the release of 43 detainees from the Taliban’s custody in a military operation in Baghlan province. Some of the detainees who were rescued told VOA’s Gul Rahim Niazman they faced torture and abuse while they were in captivity.
