The 62nd Annual Emmy Award nominations, acknowledging the best of U.S. television have been announced, with an epic World War II drama and a high school musical comedy show leading the pack.
The Pacific, a mini-series about three Marines battling Japanese forces during World War II, received the most nominations Thursday with a total of 24.
New musical comedy Glee followed with 19 nominations, including one in the outstanding comedy category. Glee, a show about a group of high school misfits who join their school's glee (singing) club, will challenge new comedy series Modern Family and the reigning champion 30 Rock.
The final season of the critically acclaimed series Lost, about plane crash survivors on a mysterious island, garnered 12 nominations, including for outstanding drama. It will compete against the popular 1960s-era show Mad Men, which won last year.
In an unusual twist, the late-night variety show hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien earned a nomination, even though he was replaced by his predecessor Jay Leno after just seven months. Jay Leno was not nominated.
The Emmy Awards will be presented August 29 in Los Angeles.
