Chinese activist filmmaker Chen Pinlin has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison in Shanghai for producing a documentary about China's nationwide protests against COVID-19 lockdowns in late 2022. Observers told VOA that Chen was heavily punished because the CCP has been trying to erase from the public memory the protests against its handling of the pandemic.
