VOA's Creole Service has set up a hotline to help Haitians everywhere reach their loved ones, after Tuesday's devastating earthquake destroyed much of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
People can call the Creole service at 202-205-9942 to leave messages for their family members that will be broadcast on the service's radio programs. Messages can be left in either Creole or English.
Creole service chief Ronald Cesar says VOA Creole also has extended its broadcast hours and is reaching out on Facebook and Twitter.
VOA continues to broadcast on shortwave. But because most of its satellite affiliates in Haiti are off the air, the Creole service also is using a Florida-based AM frequency to reach listeners in the country.
