Violence Across Egypt Ahead of Uprising Anniversary

Clashes between Egyptian riot police and supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi have left one protester dead in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Security forces fired tear gas at the protesters, who threw rocks and started small fires outside the University of Alexandria on Thursday.

The protest comes just two days ahead of the third anniversary of the uprising that forced longtime leader Hosni Mubarak from power.

Meanwhile south of Cairo, masked gunmen attacked a checkpoint, killing five Egyptian policemen and wounding two others.

The attack happened early Thursday in Beni Suef province, about 100 kilometers from the capital.

Authorities said the gunmen were riding motorcycles and fled the area after the shooting.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Islamist militants have been blamed for a number of attacks against Egyptian security forces since the country's military ousted Mr. Morsi in July.
