The head of a Vietnamese stadium that suffered a stunning collapse during a badminton tournament this week says the venue will rebuild not only its ceiling, but also its image.
Nguyen Minh Hoang, head of the stadium, told VOA's Vietnamese service that he has filed a detailed report on the incident and is waiting for directions on measures to rebuild the stadium's image.
“I think it shouldn’t take long to be worked out since this issue now is of great interest to many," he said. "We appreciate public concern, attention to this incident, and even critics, which help us improve better in the future."
The ceiling collapse did not injure anyone, but a video of the incident has surfaced online.
Hoang says leaders of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism have already apologized to domestic and international viewers as well as sports delegates.
The Vietnam Badminton Open 2014 is continuing after organizers relocated the event to another stadium in the southern Vietnamese city. State-run Tuoi Tre newspaper said the plaster ceiling was installed in 1994 and a renovation plan announced in 2012 had yet to begin.
The Vietnam Badminton Open 2014 features more than 230 players from 15 countries and is scheduled to end Sunday.
