A ship laying fiber optic cable has arrived in Cuba from Venezuela to improve Internet service.
Cuba is holding a ceremony Wednesday in recognition of the installation of the cable.
The 1,600 kilometers undersea cable linking Cuba with northern Venezuela is expected to be operational in July.
Officials say the new fiber optic cable will increase the Internet download speed in Cuba by 3,000 times.
Cuba's Deputy Minister of Information and Telecommunication applauds the improvements brought by fiber optics, but says" the cable is not a magic wand." He says Cuba still needs to make infrastructure improvements.
Cuba estimates 1.6 million of its 11 million citizens currently have limited access to the Internet.
