US Postal Service to Cut Saturday Mail Delivery

The U.S. Postal Service says it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays under a plan aimed at saving about $2 billion a year.

But the financially struggling service says it will still deliver packages six days a week. The cutback is expected to begin in August.

The delivery of letters and other mail has declined due to the use of e-mail and other Internet services being used for personal and business communications.

The move is part of a larger effort to cut costs. The Postal Service lost about $16 billion last year.

It is not immediately clear whether the Postal Service can eliminate Saturday mail delivery without approval from Congress, which oversees the independent agency.

The U.S. Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
