The Marine Corps held its 39th annual marathon in the Washington, D.C., area on Sunday.
About 30,000 runners started the race in Arlington, Virginia, and ended the 26.2-mile run at the Marine Corps War Memorial near Rosslyn, Virginia.
In the men’s division, Samuel Kosgei, 30, of Junction City, Kansas, won with the time of 2:22.11, maintaining a pace of 5:25 per mile, according to the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) website.
In the women’s division, Meghan Curran, 28, of Moorestown, New Jersey, won with a time of 2:51.47, maintaining a pace of 6:33 per mile.
Kosgei is a specialist in the U.S. Army, and Curran is a captain in the U.S. Army, according to media reports.
The course of the marathon, one of the largest marathons in the United State, covers the National Mall between the historic Lincoln Memorial and U.S. Capitol, passing many iconic landmarks, including the Washington Monument and the Smithsonians.
Race organizers said runners represented 59 countries and each branch of the U.S. armed forces.
Runners enjoyed clear skies and temperatures near 20 degree celcius during the race.
The 40th Marine Corps Marathon will be held on Oct. 25, 2015.
