A U.S. Roman Catholic archbishop says he is selling his $2.2 million mansion after facing criticism for lavish spending of church money.
Archbishop Wilton Gregory said Saturday that money from the sale of the Atlanta home will be used for the "needs of the Catholic community."
The archbishop bought the Tudor-style house three months ago with money that was donated to the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
Gregory apologized earlier in the week for buying the more than 560 square meter home after some members of his congregation raised objections.
Pope Francis has been urging Catholic officials to live simpler lives. He himself moved out of the papal apartments for more modest accommodation in a Vatican guest house.
Last month, the Vatican removed a German bishop from his post because he spent tens of millions of dollars on his residence.
