U.S. and Afghan officials have reviewed the status of terrorist threats and the security situation in Afghanistan
During a three-day visit to Afghanistan that ended Monday, assistant to the U.S. President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Lisa Monaco also discussed with Afghan officials regional interests and ways to optimize counterterrorism efforts during the next two years.
The U.S. official and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani also discussed ways the United States can help strengthen the Afghan security forces in the future. The United States is focusing on post-2014 missions with its allies and partners to train, advise, and assist Afghanistan as part of operation Resolute Support.
In meetings with military and civilian leaders and troops at bases throughout Afghanistan, Monaco sought views on the security environment and heard ideas about how to preserve the security gains in the country, while maintaining pressure on the remnants of al-Qaida and disrupting terrorist threats.
