The United States has designated a Turkish-born German citizen as a global terrorist.
The action against Emrah Erdogan blocks all his assets subject to U.S. jurisdiction and generally prohibits U.S. persons from engaging in any transactions with him, a State Department statement said Wednesday.
It also said that Erdogan, 27, had recruited foreign terrorist fighters, participated in fighting, and raised funds for al-Qaida and its Somalia-based affiliate, al-Shabab.
The statement said he trained with al-Shabab and carried out attacks in Kenya and Uganda before being apprehended in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 2012 and deported to Germany.
Erdogan was sentenced to and is currently serving seven years in prison in Germany for joining militant groups in Pakistan and Somalia and for phoning in a false terror threat of attacks in Pakistan and Germany in November 2010, the statement said.
