The U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East is in Cairo for two days of talks with regional officials on the Palestinian situation and the Middle East peace process.
After arriving in Cairo Tuesday, Robert Serry met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby.
Serry will also meet with Egyptian officials, including Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
Egyptian state media say the meeting between Serry and Shoukry will focus on recent developments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and efforts to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
Mediators have been trying for years to forge a two-state solution between the Israelis and Palestinians.
Last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he is moving ahead with a proposed U.N. Security Council resolution that would establish a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Abbas told Arab League foreign ministers he will begin consultations on drafting the resolution, but he did not mention a timetable.
